From today Carbon monoxide alarms have become a legal requirement in all new homes in Northern Ireland.  The new law also requires that an alarm be fitted whenever a boiler or solid fuel stove is upgraded or replaced.

You can buy this carbon monoxide digital display alarm here – online from Amazon .

They have other carbon monoxide alarms available too – with delivery to Ireland.  See Here

In the rest of the UK and here in Ireland – there are still no regulations or laws on Carbon Monoxide detectors.

In the UK it is estimated that about  39% of people have a carbon monoxide alarm.   UK estimates are that about  50 people are killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, and at least 4,000 are treated in hospital, each year.

Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, charcoal, coal and wood do not burn completely.

The most common cause of this is when an appliance, such as a boiler or cooker, is installed incorrectly or poorly maintained. Carbon monoxide can also build up when flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is very difficult to diagnose because symptoms are often similar to common illnesses like flu and food poisoning.

Don’t try and save money by buying a cheap alarm – it moght not work properly. When buying a carbon monoxide alarm make sure it complies with European Standard EN 50291 and carries the CE Mark and an  independent certification mark – For example a kite mark

We recommend that you do not use ‘black spot’ type  indicators that change colour when carbon monoxide is present – these will not wake you up if carbon monoxide is present whilst you are asleep.

If your appliances/flues are located in more than one room, then a carbon monoxide  alarm should be fitted in each of those rooms.
